Investing in Mental Health to Boost Global Health and Economy by 2050
This May, we join a global movement to raise our voices for mental health and why investing in mental health could change the world by 2050. Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has spotlighted the challenges faced by millions living with mental conditions globally –the $4.4 trillion opportunity no one’s talking about.
Mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders account for one-sixth of the global disease burden from noncommunicable diseases, yet they receive only 2% of healthcare funding. This leaves a massive funding gap of $200–$350 billion annually. Mental health disproportionately impacts youth, with stark gender disparities men make up 80% of substance-related deaths, while women face higher disability from anxiety and depression, impacting overall quality of life.
By 2050, scaling these interventions could unlock up to $4.4 trillion in global GDP and enable 60 million more individuals to participate in the labor force. For every $1 invested, the return is $5–$6.
Mental health drives the brain economy, and we can’t afford to ignore it. If you’re building in mental health or have a story to share, write to us.
